What Referee Abroad does
Referee Abroad connects young referees with international tournaments and mentors. The mechanism is simple: a young referee who has officiated in their domestic federation for two or three seasons gets matched with a tournament abroad, paired with a senior referee who has worked that tournament before, and given the run of a competitive weekend at a level above what they’d typically reach in the next year of domestic progression.
The dividend compounds. Every weekend abroad teaches a referee something their home federation can’t — different cultural expectations, a different style of play, a different language of management. After two or three of those, you can read a match in a way you couldn’t before.
The Ukraine chapter
Referee Abroad Ukraine handles both directions: sending Ukrainian referees to tournaments around the world and attracting international referees to Ukrainian championships and cup competitions. We run the recruitment, the matching, the on-the-ground mentoring, and the press/PR side that gets the program seen by domestic referees who’d benefit from it.
Specifically: tournament selection, paperwork (passports, work permits, federation clearances), travel logistics, lodging, mentor pairing, post-tournament debriefs. The unglamorous side of making sure a 22-year-old whistle gets to officiate a real match in Dubai or Lisbon and bring the experience back to a UPL match in Lviv.
Why I’m involved
I started officiating with the Italian federation in Padua and came back to Ukraine to work the leagues. The kind of programme Referee Abroad runs didn’t exist when I was nineteen, and I would have made decisions faster if it had. The role is partly personal — paying forward the part of the experience nobody paid forward to me.
